Hags are hideous magical creatures that look like human women (ugly in their natural form, beautiful when disguised by illusions) and often pass themselves off as witches, when in fact they are monsters—specifically, a variety of evil fairy. There are said to be three kinds of hags: black hags, green hags, and sea hags. They are often spell-casters, and although they are not undead, they have an affinity for the undead and can control them in much the same way that a nosferatu can.

Black hags are the weakest variety. In their natural form, they have black, scaly skin; yellow, reptilian eyes; long, wicked claws; and a large mouth with a long pointed tongue and razor-sharp teeth. The bite of a black hag can cause paralysis like a ghoul’s, unless the victim can save at −2. Black hags are immune to sleep, charm, hold, poison, and gas-based attacks, and they have a +2 bonus on all other saving throws (figured into the stat block above). A black hag can assume the form of a beautiful maiden at will (but only during the daytime, or at night when the moon is full), and in this form detect evil and know alignment do not work on them. A single hit from a blessed weapon will slay a black hag.
