Ah, rats of normal size and rats of unusual size: the classic low-level RPG adversary. Any given rat as a 5% chance of carrying a disease, which it can pass on with its bite.

Normal rats fight as swarms of 5 to 10 individuals, the whole pack making one attack. Giant rats fight singly, like ordinary monsters.

At one point, the party also encountered a huge giant rat with 4 HD.
